This report describes the seminars, technical assistance, and other training and services available from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Academy through an interagency agreement with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Abstract
The section that provides general information and a review of application procedures addresses facilities, accommodations, transportation, and costs; eligibility and application procedures (endorsement of applications for training and selection of applicants); and cancellations. The section on seminars focuses on those that pertain to correctional leadership development, the management of violent and disruptive juvenile offenders, services and programs for juvenile female offenders, and training for new chief executive officers. A section on "Regionalization" reviews an NIC-supported program that relies on correctional trainers to provide professional development, resource sharing, and networking opportunities to their peers throughout the Nation on a volunteer, collateral basis. In an era of rapidly increasing numbers of correctional employees and trainers who must be trained quickly, regionalization significantly increases opportunities to capacitate correctional trainers without concomitant budget increases. This section focuses on the goals of the expanded Regionalization effort, the organization, and Juvenile Justice Volunteer Regional Field Coordinators. The section on teleconferences describes audioconferences, with attention to youthful violent offenders, and videoconferences that address the development of a competency-based human resources system, benchmarks for correctional training, and the management and treatment of tuberculosis in correctional settings; teleconferences sponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention are also profiled. Other Academy activities described are the National Juvenile Justice Needs Assessment Forum and conference workshops. Also included are an application for NIC/OJJDP training and teleconference site application.
