Abstract
Resources related to preparing for a school critical incident encompass threat assessments/site surveys, emergency plan development, interagency cooperation, and physical security and crime prevention through environmental design. Another section profiles resources for responding to a school critical incident. The focus is on police patrol and tactical response, communications, and tactical emergency medicine. Subtopics address communications interoperability, incident command and management, negotiations, media relations, and dealing with bombs/explosives. The third category of resources pertains to the resolving of a school critical incident. The resources will assist schools, families, and communities to cope with the aftermath of a school critical incident. One set of resources focuses on dealing with posttraumatic stress disorder, specifically how to prevent, recognize, and mitigate the effects of this disorder. Some of the resources address posttraumatic stress disorder among law enforcement officers who respond to critical school incidents. Additional resources pertain to lessons learned from previous school violent critical incidents, sample plans, organizations that deal with school violence, and a glossary.
