The scope and nature of aggressive behavior in the schools suggests that physical and verbal assault are frequent and significant problems in educational settings.
Abstract
Research indicates that 73 percent of the Nation's schools experience a major crime every 5 months, and 50 percent had more than one in a semester. Approaches for treating aggressive behavior, based on contingency management and self-management perspectives of aggression, are discussed. Treatment approaches include reinforcement, ignoring, response cost, time out, peer procedures, aversion consequences, social skills, problemsolving and stress-inoculation training. Research representing each type of intervention strategy is identified. It is suggested that preventive measures for anticipating aggressive behavior be considered. 45 references.
