THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS CRIMINAL HISTORY, DEMOGRAPHIC, AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE DATA FOR A SAMPLE OF BRITISH CHILDREN HOUSED IN 6 OBSERVATION/ASSESSMENT CENTERS IN BIRMINGHAM DURING THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1974.
Abstract
THE DATA SHOWED THAT THE MAJORITY OF CHILDREN TAKEN INTO CARE HAD COMMITTED ONLY MINOR OFFENSES. OVER HALF THE CHILDREN GOING THROUGH OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT CENTERS DURING THE PERIOD WERE INVOLVED IN TRUANT ACTIVITIES AT A REPORTABLE LEVEL. FINALLY, THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A TENDENCY FOR TRUANTS TO BE ABSCONDERS AND ALSO TO HAVE PROBLEMS OF AGGRESSION OR VIOLENCE.
