The serious habitual offender/drug involved program (SHO/DI) emphasizes a law enforcement approach to this group of juvenile delinquents.
Abstract
The central unit of the Jacksonville, Fla., SHO/DI is the crime analysis unit (CAU) of the sheriff's office. The CAU established juvenile files and developed standards for the identification of SHO/DI youth. The implementation approach has involved careful planning to ensure department-wide understanding of the program and the support and cooperation of other agencies. One component of the program is the school crime reduction project, involving an incident profiling system for tracking the extent and nature of school crime. Project activities such as crime analysis and cooperative information sharing will permit police to develop policies for handling different types of crime and different types of offenders more appropriately and effectively. In addition, cooperation between schools and police will save taxpayers the cost of school-related crime and reduce fear of crime in the schools.
