The School Resource Officer (SRO) program was developed to answer the need for effective law enforcement within the schools, which represent a microcosm of the outside society and which suffer from similar problems of violence and crime.
Abstract
The first SRO program in North Carolina was created by the Charlotte Police Department in 1971; it was not until 1993, however, that a sufficient number of officers were assigned to the unit to allow each officer to be responsible for one high school. Currently, there are over 170 SROs operating in various cities around the State. The program places a law enforcement official in a school full time to provide support programs and services to students and staff. The program is based on a triad concept in which the SRO serves as law enforcement officer, teacher, and law- related counselor. In addition to law enforcement, an SRO's duties include law-related education, drug and alcohol prevention, and life skills training.
