These recommendations are intended to provide broad guidelines for Arizona for use in redesigning the way in which it deals with children and as victims, with emphasis on the role of schools.
Abstract
The Schools and Crime Working Group recommends that the Arizona Department of Education establish a statewide violence prevention mission statement creating Arizona schools as safe sanctuaries for children and that the Department fund and implement a statewide media campaign against drugs, gangs, and violence in schools. Further recommendations include violence prevention training for all teachers, comprehensive school safety action plans in all public school districts, alternative educational programs for students expelled or suspended from schools, violence prevention teams in each school, and violence prevention curricula for all children at all grade levels. Additional actions should include improved physical security in schools, a single point of access to all programs in the Arizona children service delivery system, and interagency cooperation in serving children.
