A school principal from Washington, D.C., describes delinquency prevention programs in selected secondary schools and suggests ways schools can reduce incidents of violence and vandalism.
Abstract
During the 1975-76 school year, the principal identified and visited secondary schools that had experienced recent incidents of violence but were on their way toward stabilizing and containing the disruptive situation. The principal, whose work was sponsored by the National Institute of Education, discusses the selection of the schools visited, lists the schools, and discusses his approach to the visits. The major portion of the report is concerned with the principal's conclusions about the role of leadership, school climate, and outside forces on the schools and with his consideration of what worked to reduced violence and disruption. He suggests caring, control, and increased or improved communication as prevention measures. The role of the principal in controlling violence is also emphasized. (ERIC abstract modified)
