Annotation

This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP), on the screening and assessment of alcohol- and other drug-abusing (AOD) adolescents, represents another step by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to bring national leadership to bear in the effort to improve AOD abuse treatment.

Abstract

This TIP is based on the three principles that adolescents deserve effective and appropriate care, that they have a right to privacy and to confidential handling of any information they provide, and that program staff must consider cultural, ethnic, and gender concerns in all aspects of the screening and assessment process. This document discusses the history behind the development of this TIP, and issues in the preliminary and comprehensive assessment of adolescents for referral and treatment. Legal issues in the screening and assessment of adolescents include the right of juveniles to privacy; consent; and rules for communicating with others about youth. The final chapter examines issues related to screening and assessing youths involved in the juvenile justice system. 6 figures and 6 appendixes
