THE EVALUATORS CONCLUDE THAT THE DEFENDER ASSOCIATION IS PROVIDING LEGAL SERVICES TO INDIGENT DEFENDANTS THAT ARE AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN THOSE PRESENTLY BEING PROVIDED BY THE PRIVATE BAR TO NON-INDIGENT DEFENDANTS.
Abstract
THIS REPORT IS COMPRISED OF AN INTRODUCTION, A DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT OPERATIONS OF THE DEFENDER ASSOCIATION, A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THREE OTHER PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICES SURVEYED DURING THE PROJECT, AN EVALUATION OF THE DEFENDER ASSOCIATION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN THE DAILY OPERATIONS OF THE ASSOCIATION. THE EVALUATORS FOUND THAT THE COST PER CLIENT OF THE DEFENDER ASSOCIATION WAS RELATIVELY HIGH, BUT COULD PROBABLY BE REDUCED WITH MORE EFFICIENT INTERNAL MANAGEMENT AND CLERICAL PROCEDURES.
