This study compared the effects of a multifaceted intervention for juvenile court probationers with the effects of standard probation services.
Abstract
The experimental intervention ran for approximately 3 months; 22 subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group, and the remaining 21 subjects formed the standard group. Of the 43 subjects, 33 were male and 27 were white. Subject ages ranged from 12 to 17 years. The experimental intervention consisted of outdoor adventure, social skills training, and parent skills training. Both experimental and standard groups showed substantial reductions in status and criminal offenses over a 2-year followup period, with no significant differences between groups. The results suggest that the experimental intervention was no more effective than standard probation services in which case workers have close contact with clients. Implications of the findings for researchers and policymakers are discussed. 59 references, 6 notes, and 3 tables
