This paper presents the results of a survey of 135 secondary school teachers in the Abeokuta Local Government Area of Ogun State in Nigeria regarding their knowledge level and views on drug abuse.
Abstract
About 59 percent of the respondents, mostly males under the age of 30 years, completed the anonymous 28-item questionnaires. The majority of the respondents had not been previously exposed to drug education as students, and less than 20 percent were presently involved in drug education. Although a majority of the teachers understood the definitions of drug abuse, their views and knowledge of the common potential drugs of abuse and dependence were limited. Nine out of 10 respondents chose guidance counseling as the treatment of choice for student drug abusers, while 4 out of 10 opted for psychiatric referral. Recommendations for teacher-targeted drug education programs are listed on the basis of the findings of this study. 5 tables and 44 references (Author abstract modified)
