PRESENTING MATERIAL GATHERED MAINLY THROUGH INTERVIEWS WITH MEMBERS OF THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY (IRA), THIS BOOK PROVIDES A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF NORTHERN IRELAND FROM THE TAN WAR (1916-21) TO THE 1970'S.
Abstract
THE HISTORY OF THE IRA IS PORTRAYED FROM ITS INCEPTION IN 1916; THROUGH THE TUMULTUOUS 1920'S AND THE DEPRESSION-INFLICTED 1930'S; THROUGH THE IRA'S INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION PRECEDING THE WORLD WAR II ERA, AND IRA ACTIVITIES DURING WORLD WAR II; THROUGH THE RECONSTRUCTION YEARS OF 1945-51 AND IRA ACTIVITIES OF THE 1950'S AND 1960'S WHICH BUILT ITS CAMPAIGN; AND THROUGH TO THE EVEN MORE AGGRESSIVE CAMPAIGN OF THE 1970'S. THE TEXT IS PRECEDED BY SEVERAL MAPS OF IRELAND, DUBLIN, AND BELFAST. A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF PHOTOGRAPHS DEPICTING INFLUENTIAL MEMBERS OF THE IRA AND SIGNIFICANT EVENTS FROM THE 1920'S TO THE 1970'S ARE INCLUDED. THE DETAILED NARRATIVE ANALYZING EACH HISTORICAL PERIOD ENDS WITH A DISCUSSION ON THE WAR OF ATTRITION OF THE 1970'S. AN ANNUAL CEREMONY OF REDEDICATION TO THE CAUSE OF AN INDEPENDENT IRISH REPUBLIC BY MEMBERS OF THE IRA IS DEPICTED FROM A SYMPATHETIC VIEWPOINT. EACH CHAPTER HAS REFERENCE NOTES AND THE BOOK INCLUDES LISTS OF SOURCES AND AN INDEX. (PRG)
