This article examines prison security in South Africa.
Abstract
The South African government has recently completed a search for new security concepts that would overcome the dysfunctional features of traditional facilities, such as uncontrolled noise, limited inmate mobility, limited inmate access to services, and lack of effective operator control. The high-tech electronic prison security systems specified for all new South African government or privately operated detention facilities address those problems, drastically reduce the potential for escape experienced by traditionally operated prisons, and save millions in long-term operating costs. The article describes new systems installed in Louis Trichardt Maximum Security Prison and in Kokstad Super Maximum Security Prison. The Trichardt facility features dedicated prison door control modules that monitor and control all functions relating to a prison cell. The Kokstad prison integrates 11 security sub-system components, including the control of pneumatically operated sliding and swing doors, closed circuit television, digital video recording, intercom and public address, access control, a perimeter fence taut wire system, alarm monitoring, and fire detection system into a multi-level control room hierarchy.
