The four parts of this book on security and crime prevention encompass crime and crime prevention, personal crime prevention, business crime prevention, and community-based crime prevention.
Abstract
The first part covers the general nature of crime prevention; current theories of crime prevention; and the effect that the family, school, and peer groups have on both crime causation and crime prevention. A new chapter in this second edition focuses on the impact of crime in society. Part II discusses personal crime prevention and examines the measures individuals can take to prevent crime and protect themselves, their families, and their homes from victimization. This section covers not only violent street crimes, but also nonviolent crimes such as deceptive advertising, medical quackery, and various other frauds. Chapters on the prevention of abuse and age-specific crime prevention programs consolidate parts from several chapters in the first edition. Part III, Business Crime Prevention, considers both internal and external security problems for businesses. Effects of corruption in both business and government are addressed along with the use of security surveys and target-hardening procedures. Part IV, Community-Based Crime Prevention, examines environmental design, various community programs, the role and relationship of criminal justice agencies, and new directions in crime prevention in which a discussion of promising new ideas, approaches, and strategies is included. One chapter expands the discussion of volunteer recruitment and maintenance introduced in the first edition. Chapter references and a subject index
