DESCRIPTION OF A PROGRAM OPERATED BY THE WILMINGTON (DE) POLICE DEPARTMENT IN WHICH AUTOMATIC DIAL ALARM SYSTEMS AND COVERT SUPER 8 SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS ARE INSTALLED IN STORES IN HIGH-ROBBERY AREAS.
Abstract
IN THIS PROGRAM TWENTY CAMERA AND ALARM UNITS ARE ROTATED AMONG HIGH-CRIME TARGETS, SUCH AS LIQUOR STORES AND CONVENIENCE FOOD STORES, AND LEFT INSTALLED FOR VARYING LENGTHS OF TIME. OTHER COMPONENTS OF THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE THE EDUCATION OF STOREOWNERS ON HOW TO AVOID ROBBERIES, BUSINESS SURVEYS WHICH LEAD TO SECURITY RECOMMENDATIONS, STUDIES OF CRIME STATISTICS TO PINPOINT PATTERNS, STAKEOUTS, EQUIPMENT LOANS, AND SPECIAL PATROLS IN HIGH CRIME AREAS. STATISTICS SHOW THAT ROBBERIES HAVE DROPPED ALMOST ONE-THIRD (FROM 399 TO 260) AND THE PROGRAM HAS STRONG CITIZEN SUPPORT., ESPECIALLY FROM STOREOWNERS.
