Although the United States Military Academy at West Point has the appearance of any long-established eastern university, it maintains an exceptionally safe security environment, without barrier fencing or high-technology intrusion detectors.
Abstract
Crime prevention at West Point has been achieved largely through curriculum standards and supervised student involvement in the campus community life. These measures are supplemented by traditional security features, including access control, security lighting, residence design, campus layout, and security patrols of the campus. The West Point student goals, academics, honor, and physical fitness, directly and indirectly, promote campus security. Accomplishment of these goals is achieved when faculty and staff closely monitor and guide each student's progress. As a result, common university student problems including suicide, hazing, theft, cheating, vandalism, and false fire alarms are rarer occurrences at West Point. The article contains 2
