Abstract
Following an introduction to security and loss control, considerations in personnel selection and contingency planning are discussed. The role of locks and keys, safes and strong rooms, protective glass, and electronic techniques (e.g., guarding and access control systems) in protecting property are discussed. The essential importance of overt and covert crime detection to security is discussed, and guidelines are provided for compiling a risk profile of an organization. A description of methods of detection includes a look at information and informants, crime indicators, suspect targeting, saturation, inspections, surprise checks, and traps. Surveillance and countersurveillance also are considered. A section on investigation covers preparation, the investigation and techniques, evidence presentation, arrest and legal requirements, interviewing procedures and techniques, and recovery procedures. Finally special security concerns are discussed in relation to the effects of drug abuse, retail security, fire prevention and control, and computer security. Figures and index.
