Abstract
A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PRISON CLASSIFICATION COMPARES THE PERIODS IN WHICH ALL OFFENDERS WERE TREATED THE SAME, WHEN PUNISHMENT WAS MADE TO FIT THE CRIME PUNISHMENT WOULD FIT THE CRIMINAL. PROBLEMS OF CLASSIFICATION AND THE TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS, MAXIMUM, MEDIUM, AND MINIMUM SECURITY, ARE DISCUSSED. CLASSIFICATION AND INTERRELATION OF TREATMENT AND CUSTODY ARE PRESENTED.
