This handbook is designed for introductory courses on security, but it also provides a foundation for entry-level security officers and serves as a refresher for more experienced security officers, supervisors, and managers.
Abstract
Each chapter in the handbook begins with behavioral objectives to guide the reader and provide a list of covered topics. Key terms are defined and basic information is presented before moving on to more advanced topics. Numerous examples help the reader relate theory to practice, and boxed-in cases present security situations that further illustrate the reality of the field. At the end of each chapter, objective questions serve as a review and test of knowledge. Case problems enable the reader to apply information acquired from each chapter. Specific chapters deal with the history and development of private security, the business and functions of private security, important areas in which security is involved (public relations, crime prevention, post assignments and patrol, report writing, law, arrest, self-defense, and weapons), threats facing businesses and the role security plays in combatting losses, and how to enter and advance within the security profession. Glossaries of legal terms, intrusion alarm systems, and locks are included. 107 references, 6 tables, and 97 figures
