This slide and cassette-tape presentation provides suggestions to truck drivers and dock workers for preventing freight thefts.
Abstract
The speaker explains that companies lose millions of dollars through freight thefts each year and that such losses have adverse effects on both the companies and their employees. The majority of losses occur as a result of pilferage and theft rather than hijackings, and although most employees are honest, statistics show that a lack of security consciousness on the part of personnel is responsible for most thefts. Employees are encouraged to help eliminate theft by making careful counts of freight being handled and by signing for only those items they have seen, by making sure freight is properly protected, by securing vehicles each time they make stops, and by checking the condition of packaging to eliminate damaged containers which invite pilferage. Employees are also warned that theft loss records always indicate which personnel were the last to handle missing freight items and that repeated mention in such reports may direct suspicion at such persons. The use of and procedures for handling truck seals are explained, and methods for dealing with high value freight are reviewed. Supplementary materials are not included.
