The security level of coeducational juvenile correctional institutions in the United States influences residents' adherence to the peer culture in ways similar to those found in inmate codes within adult correctional institutions.
Abstract
This study, cased on a survey of 515 residents in five training schools in one southeastern state, shows that adherence to the peer culture is greatest within the maximum and minimum security institutions. Elements examined in this study pertaining to peer culture include informant activity among peers, aggression toward peers, distrust of staff, manipulation of staff, and aggression toward staff.
