PROTECTIVE MEASURES TO ACHIEVE PERSONAL SECURITY IN AND OUTSIDE OF THE HOME ARE OUTLINED IN THIS REPORT FROM IRELAND'S ROYAL ULSTER CONSTABULARY.
Abstract
A COMMONSENSE APPROACH TO PERSONAL SECURITY AT HOME ADDRESSES POSSIBLE MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO PROTECT DOORS AND WINDOWS, IMPROVE LIGHTING, PROPERLY UTILIZE THE TELEPHONE IN EMERGENCIES, MAINTAIN A STRICT CHECK ON HOUSE KEYS, ARRANGE FIXED TIMES FOR VISITORS OR WORKMEN, AND IMPROVE SECURITY IN THE GARDEN AREA AND GARAGE. IN ADDITION, THE POLICE URGE THE INSTALLATION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF ALARMS, THE USE OF A GOOD WATCHDOG, THE REQUEST FOR OBSERVATION OF A HOME IF RESIDENTS ARE ON VACATION, THE INSPECTION OF THE HOME UPON RETURN FROM A HOLIDAY, AND THE NOTIFICATION TO POLICE OF ANY SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE OR PERSONS IN THE VICINITY. TO AVOID DANGER WHILE AWAY FROM HOME, NUMEROUS SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED THE TRAVELLER WHO IS WALKING, DRIVING, OR BEING CHAUFFEURED. ON A TRAIN, THE TRAVELLER SHOULD ENTER A COMPARTMENT WHICH IS ALREADY OCCUPIED; ON A BOAT, THE VOYAGER SHOULD BE CAREFUL ABOUT WALKING ON THE DECK AT NIGHT; AND WHEN USING A TAXI, THE TRAVELLER SHOULD NOT SHARE THE CAR WITH A PERSON UNKNOWN TO HIM. IN ADDITION, THE VACATIONER SHOULD AVOID ALLOWING VISITORS TO ENTER HIS HOTEL SUITE IF THEY ARE STRANGERS. TO GUARD AGAINST INCENDIARY DEVICES SENT BY MAIL, POLICE SUGGEST CHECKING THE POSTMARK, THE INSCRIPTION, THE BALANCE AND WEIGHT, HOLES AND STRAINS, AND THE SMELL AND FEEL OF THE LETTER OR PACKAGE. PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED UPON RECEIPT OF A SUSPICIOUS LETTER OR PACKAGE ARE DETAILED. FINALLY, OTHER SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR HANDLING MAIL AND DELIVERIES, ANONYMOUS CALLS OR TELEPHONE THREATS, FIREARMS, AND SECURITY EQUIPMENT. ADVICE FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS IS ALSO INCLUDED. NO REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (WJR)
