In North Carolina, citizen involvement with crime prevention in public housing and federally assisted housing is being promoted through seminars to be held in various communities during 1983.
Abstract
The seminars emphasize that crime prevention must grow from within the neighborhood itself, and that it cannot be imposed on a neighborhood by the police or management. Conference topics include the improved management of public safety, physical security, involvement of residents through such means as phone observations and building captains, and employment programs. Other topics include services to residents such as victim assistance and dispute mediation, the elements of effective police involvement, and techniques for fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors. The seminars also discuss types of programs for responding to offenses committed by residents on other residents, to predatory theft, and to victimless crimes. Basic crime prevention programs are discussed and focus on organization and on crime-specific countermeasures. Guidelines on the role of building captains and an organizational chart are included.
