Abstract
After reviewing theories of leadership, the handbook summarizes requirements of leadership and traits that an effective supervisor should possess. Various leadership styles are described and suggestions offered to guide individuals in choosing a management style. The text explains the traditional decisionmaking process by dividing it into five sequential components beginning with problem identification and closing with implementation. Concepts and patterns of communication are explored from a supervisors' perspective, and suggestions on from a supervisors' perspective, and suggestions on improving communications skills are presented. The chapter on personnel management addresses disciplinary actions, employee counseling, and motivating subordinates. A manager's basic administrative responsibilities are detailed, such as controlling and directing subordinates' activities, planning, and organizing to accomplish objectives. Other subjects covered by the text include the functional supervisor's role in the private security industry, the need for expertise regarding basic employee rights, and commonly used employee appraisal systems.
