Information is provided on conducting a security survey by campus security officers.
Abstract
This article stresses the need for campus security agencies to conduct a security survey. The purpose of the survey is to take a critical look at the campus in order to identify areas that are particularly vulnerable and to make recommendations to improve security based on a clear understanding of security and safety needs. In our litigious society, failure to adequately assess area of risk or to implement improvements in known areas of risk could result in liability to the campus security agency. The author provides a four-step method for performing the security survey. The first step involves identifying and ranking the college's assets. The next step is to assess the various threats to both people and property on the campus. In order to properly allocate resources, a third step would be to determine the probability a given event will occur and the impact the occurrence would have on the campus community. Finally, recommendations for loss prevention measures should be made. Presentation of a professional-looking report is also important. The author makes some recommendations regarding format of the report.
