This 1995 conference on criminal justice policy and crime control, hosted by Oklahoma State University, allowed members of the criminal justice community to debate sentencing and incarceration policies.
Abstract
The conference was attended by 185 persons, including district attorneys, judges, State legislators, academicians, corrections officials, and officials from the Oklahoma Governor's office. Presenters and panelists provided insights on many policy issues, including prison overcrowding, public safety, alternatives to incarceration, and costs of incarceration. The morning dialogue of the conference focused on truth in sentencing, sentencing guidelines, mandatory sentencing, and elements of effective sentencing policies. The afternoon dialogue addressed prison population increases and incarceration costs. Conference highlights included a discussion of Pennsylvania's sentencing system, truth in sentencing legislation in Oklahoma, attitudes toward crime and punishment in Oregon, incarceration in Maine and Oklahoma, and Arizona's prison system. A brief overview of each conference speaker's presentation and each panelist's comments and the full dialogue of conference sessions are provided. Tables, figures, and photographs
