A SERIES OF REPORTS INCLUDING CS AS A RIOT CONTROL AGENT, ITS EFFECTS ON MONKEYS, BREATHING PATTERNS DURING HUMAN EXPOSURE, ITS EFFECTS ON HUMAN SKIN, AND THE DECONTAMINATION OF CS AND CS2 IS PRESENTED.
Abstract
BASED ON TEST RESULTS, CS IS CHARACTERIZED AS A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE RIOT CONTROL AGENT, FAST-ACTING AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY FEARED, BUT WITH A SAFETY FACTOR THAT MAKES THE PROBABILITY OF LASTING EFFECTS OR DEATH VERY LOW. THE EFFECTS ON MAN OF CS AEROSOLS ARE SUMMARIZED AS PRODUCING INCAPACITATION EITHER BY AFFECTING THE EYES, THE RESPORATORY TRACT, OR BOTH. A STUDY OF THE ORDER, SEVERITY, AND RESOLUTION OF PATHOLOGIC CANGES IN MACACA MULATTA MONKEYS EXPOSED TO CS IS DISCUSSED. ANOTHER REPORT EXAMINES THE BREATHING PATTERN OF HUMAN SUBJECTS DURING TESTS ON THE INCAPACITATING EFFECTS OF CS. ALTHOUGH THE BREATHING PATTERNS WERE DISRUPTED BY CS, ADEQUATE VENTILATION OF THE LUNGS WAS MAINTAINED; INCAPACITATION WAS THEREFORE ATTRIBUTED TO THE UNPLEASANT SENSATIONS RATHER THAN TO ANY DEGREE OF RESPIRATORY FAILURE. TESTS ON THE EFFECTS OF CS ON HUMAN SKIN CONCLUDED THAT VERY HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF CS UNDER TROPICAL CONDITIONS OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY PRODUCE BLISTERING OF HUMAN SKIN; THE DISABILITY PRODUCED BY THESE SECOND-DEGREE CHEMICAL BURNS IS TREATABLE, BUT MAY INCAPACITATE THE SUBJECT FOR UP TO 10 DAYS. THE FINAL REPORT DISCUSSED THE UTILITY OF AN EFFECTIVE, INEXPENSIVE, EASILY PRODUCIBLE AQUEOUS DECONTAMINANT FOR THE IRRITANTS CS AND CS2.
