Recent developments in microcomputers and electronic digital mapping techniques suggest that a self-contained vehicle location and monitoring system can be put to practical use at an inexpensive price.

Abstract

Currently, two systems based on self-contained vehicle location techniques are being developed by Japanese police authorities and others. The first is a sophisticated Computerized Location and Status Display System (CLSDS) for emergency dispatching use. CLSDS automatically provides the actual locations and status of the patrol cars for the dispatcher in the Police Communications Center, which will effectively reduce response time and improve command and control operations. The second system is the Advanced Mobile Traffic Information and Communications System (ANTICS) for general public use which will help to ensure safe and smooth driving conditions by offering drivers up-to-the-minute route guidance information such as vehicle location, traffic condition information and hazard warnings about congestion, accidents, and roadworks. 6 figures, 5 references.
