Annotation

The chapter examines child sexual assault prevention, self-defense against rape, and sexual harassment prevention research and theory. The differences and similarities in these three areas suggest directions for theory, research, and practice of self-defense against sexual coercion.

Abstract

The examination begins with a discussion of the current state of self-defense theory, research, and practice which includes the origins of self-defense and the prevention programs themselves. The child sexual assault prevention programs teach the child ideas such as body ownership, touch continuum, and secrets. Self-defense training programs against rape usually focus on teaching women physical defense skills. Sexual harassment prevention programs develop an awareness of sexual harassment, methods of dealing with it, and institutional policies for challenging it. The issues within the various programs are discussed as well as the current research and literature on self-defense against sexual coercion. The chapter concludes with suggestions for directions for theory, research, and practice to go in the future. 1 note
