THE RESULTS OF A 1976 OMAHA POLICE DEPARTMENT SURVEY ON SENIOR CITIZEN VICTIMIZATION, FEARS ABOUT CRIME, CRIME PREVENTION HABITS, AND HOW CRIME HAS AFFECTED THEIR MOBILITY.
Abstract
THE 561 RESPONDENTS WERE ALSO GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUGGEST WHAT TYPE OF CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS THEY WOULD BE MOST INTERESTED IN. TWO SEPARATE GROUPS OF SENIOR CITIZENS MADE UP THE SURVEY - RESIDENTS OF CITY-OPERATED SENIOR CITIZEN HIGH-RISE APARTMENTS AND THOSE LIVING IN PRIVATE RESIDENCES. SEVENTY-EIGHT PERCENT OF THOSE RESIDING IN HIGH RISES FELT THAT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD WAS AVERAGE OR ABOVE IN SAFETY, AS COMPARED TO 89 PERCENT OF THOSE RESIDING IN PRIVATE RESIDENCES. EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT OF ALL RESPONDENTS FELT THE POLICE PROTECTION WAS AVERAGE OR ABOVE. SEVENTY-FOUR PERCENT INDICATED THAT THEIR PERSONAL FEELING ABOUT CRIME HAS TO SOME DEGREE HAMPERED THEIR FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND ACTIVITY. A TOTAL OF 15 PERCENT HAD BEEN THE VICTIM OF CRIME SINCE AGE 60. BURGLARY WAS THE MOST FREQUENTLY COMMITTED CRIME FOLLOWED BY LARCENY, ROBBERY, AND PURSE SNATCHING. THE RESIDENTS OF HIGH RISE APARTMENTS SHOWED CONCERN OVER THE VIOLENT CRIMES OF ROBBERY AND ASSAULT, WHILE RESIDENTS OF PRIVATE HOMES SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT INTEREST IN BURGLARY AND VANDALISM....ELW
