IN ALL THREE COUNTRIES THE EMPHASIS IS AWAY FROM DETENTION FOR NEARLY ALL CRIMES. PROBATION AND COMMUNITY ORIENTED CORRECTIONS ARE USED WHENEVER POSSIBLE. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO JUVENILES. PRISON TERMS, WHEN GIVEN, ARE NORMALLY MUCH SHORTER THAN THOSE ORDERED IN THE UNITED STATES.
