This detailed analysis of the robbery sentencing decisions of the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal (Australia) covers the period between 1978 and 1989.
Abstract
The introduction discusses the legislative changes that have impacted sentencing over the period examined and considers other factors bearing upon sentencing decisions. After presenting the statutory provisions that authorize robbery sentences in New South Wales, robbery crime statistics are presented as background information. Chapters pertaining to factors in the sentencing decision discuss the role of the sentencing judge, sentence appeals, extreme sentences, and violations of conditional release. In presenting the sentencing data for robbery offenses, the offenses are grouped by similar characteristics. Offense categories are robbery by a parolee, robbery by an escapee, bank robbery, robbery of financial institutions other than banks, robbery of pharmacies, robbery by drug addicts, robbery of gas stations and convenience stores, personal robberies, robberies in private homes, and robbery of taxi drivers. 14 tables, 8 figures.
