These tables present statistics on the numbers of cases and the median, average, minimum, and maximum sentences for specific offenses involved in cases processed by the higher criminal courts of Victoria, Australia in 1996.
Abstract
The tables are intended to assist courts and attorneys in their roles in sentencing. An introduction explains the tables and how to use them, summarizes the major law changes since 1980 that may have changed sentencing practices, and presents definitions and counting rules. The tables cover the sentences and their lengths, minimum terms as percentages of the sentence, and the original terms of imprisonment for persons receiving suspended sentences. The individual offenses are grouped into nine categories: (1) homicide and related offenses; (2) wounding, assaults, and related offenses; (3) sex offenses; (4) robbery and related offenses for gain; (5) theft, burglary, and related offenses; (6) fraud; (7) property damage; (8) other offenses; and (9) other charges taken into account.
