THE SERVICE FOR GIRLS IN DISTRESS HELPS ISRAELI WOMEN COPE WITH THE PROBLEMS THAT THEY FACE IN ATTEMPTING TO CARRY OUT THEIR ACCEPTED FUNCTIONS IN ISRAELI SOCIETY.
Abstract
THE CARE PROVIDED BY THE SERVICE FOR GIRLS IN DISTRESS IS DESIGNED TO EFFECT CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR AND NEGATIVE SELF-IMAGE OF YOUNG WOMEN WHO ARE IN A VARIETY OF TROUBLED SOCIAL SITUATIONS (E.G., PREDELINQUENT GIRLS, VAGRANTS, PROSTITUTES). THE PROGRAM TRIES TO ESTABLISH PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE WOMEN AND THEIR STAFF WORKERS WHILE PROVIDING THE NECESSARY MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTENTION IN A STRUCTURED ENVIRONMENT. TEMPORARY REFUGES OR SHELTERS ARE AVAILABLE PRIOR TO TRANSFER TO A MORE PERMANENT REHABILITATION PROGRAM FOR VAGRANT AND ABANDONED GIRLS WHO ARE NOT BEING SERVED BY ANY OTHER AGENCY. YOUNG WOMEN WITH SERIOUS PROBLEMS MAY BE ASSIGNED TO TOTAL CARE INSTITUTIONS; THOSE WHO REQUIRE LESS DIRECT CARE BUT STILL COULD BENEFIT FROM SUPERVISION MAY LIVE IN COMMUNITY HOSTELS. ADOLESCENT GIRLS ARE SERVED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES BY ORGANIZED CLUBS OR GROUP HOMES WHICH DIRECT THE USE OF THE TEENAGERS' LEISURE TIME AND PROVIDE A GROUP SITUATION FOR COUNSELING AND SOCIALIZATION.
