RESULTS OF AN ATTITUDE SURVEY OF ALBUQUERQUE POLICE OFFICERS, DEALING WITH ATTITUDES REGARDING WOMEN, LAW ENFORCEMENT, SEX CRIMES, AND SOCIAL AND MORAL VALUES.
Abstract
THE TWO QUESTIONNAIRES THAT ARE EVALUATED IN THE PAPER WERE DISTRIBUTED AT SEMINARS CONDUCTED BY THE BERNALILLO COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH CENTER. IN THE TESTS WHICH MEASURED ATTITUDES TOWARD WOMEN, LAW ENFORCEMENT, SEX CRIMES, AND SOCIAL VALUES, OVER 70 PERCENT OF THE RESPONSES OF OFFICERS IN THE GROUP INDICATED COMPASSIONATE ATTITUDES TOWARD VICTIMS OF SEX CRIMES AND LIBERAL ATTITUDES TOWARD OFFENDERS. HOWEVER, THE MAJORITY OF THE OFFICERS EXPRESSED THE OPINION THAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS JUST A CRIME FIGHTING AGENCY, AND THE POLICEMAN'S PRIMARY FUNCTION IS INVESTIGATION, NOT MENTAL HEALTH. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE PROGRAM, THE OFFICERS' REACTIONS TO IT, AND THE RESULTS OF TESTS ADMINISTERED DURING THE SEMINARS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
