After discussing types of sexual offenses and anger as a key factor in sexual offenses, this book discusses the assessment of sex offenders, management and treatment approaches, and helpful treatment listings and forms.
Abstract
The types of offenses discussed include rape, pedophilia, incest, exhibitionism, voyeurism, and fetishism. In discussing anger as a key factor in sexual offenses, the book notes that the backgrounds of both violent and nonviolent sex offenders are often characterized by their own victimization by physical and sexual abuse. For the sex offender with feelings of inadequacy and conflicts which center around dependency-autonomy, anger can be a comfortable emotion, providing temporary relief from the more painful feelings of vulnerability, fear, and rejection, which lower self-esteem. Among the issues discussed in relation to assessment are the complexities of diagnosis, information gathering, sexual histories, and assessment instruments. The dangers of denial and the court process are each discussed in separate chapters. Topics discussed in association with management and treatment approaches are treatment or punishment as an ethical dilemma, a profile of offenders in treatment, treatment approaches, and the group experience. The forms and listings provided are designed to help professionals in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders. 120 references, 26-item annotated bibliography.
