Abstract
This manual provides guidelines and training material for the Sexual Assault Peer Education (SAPE) program, which aims to instruct high school students in the definitions of sexual abuse, in the skills for helping someone who discloses a sexual assault, about the resources for survivors of sexual abuse, in working with high school teachers and staff, in providing campuswide outreaches to a variety of students and staff, and including males in the process of educating and raising awareness about sexual assault. Six training sessions are presented for high school students interested in becoming peer educators. The sessions encompass an organizational meeting, information on sexual abuse, the acquaintance rape scenario, peer education, diversity and myth busting, and resources and practice. Posttraining workshops are also discussed. A section on activities for classroom teachers contains a compilation of activities and programs that teachers and health educators can use to help students develop awareness about sexual assault and build empathy for those dealing with this occurrence. Each exercise is described in detail, providing learning objectives, step-by-step instructions, and materials needs. The topics address conceptions of sexual assault, who is responsible for rape, information on sex and sexual abuse, the sexual assault continuum, and a review of changed perceptions of sexual assault and its meaning. Appended bibliography and extensive appendixes with supplementary materials
