These 15 papers examine the relationship between child sexual abuse and later eating disorders, with emphasis on the prevalence of sexual abuse among persons with eating disorders, trauma-based theory, false memory syndrome, and treatment techniques.
Abstract
An overview focuses on how a history of sexual assault can serve as a predictor of subsequent problem with food, social and cultural factors of concern, and future directions for prevention programs. Chapters on clinical perspectives review trauma-based theory, dissociation, and abreactive and ego-states therapy; the treatment of disturbance in body image; medical issues; the emerging sexual self of the person with an eating disorder; and effective treatment techniques. The final four chapters focus on controversies related to the process of revictimization, cultural issues, issues related to reenactment and trauma, and false memory syndrome.
