This book discusses various issues related to safety and prevention of sexual abuse in residential care; individual articles discuss the incidence of abuse, training and program policies, specialized concerns, and suggested procedures for child abuse prevention, assessment, and intervention.
Abstract
The first chapter examines sexual behaviors of latency- age children in residential treatment, offering suggestions for case management, behavioral interventions, and treatment planning. The two subsequent chapters discuss methods of governing the sexual behavior of children in residential treatment settings, and administrative and clinical practices that enhance and ensure safety. Two methods of preventing child abuse include staff training and adolescent offender programs developed specifically for use in residential treatment. The final chapters focus on allegations of sexual abuse in residential programs, discussing definitional concerns, mandated reporting, investigatory practices, and resource allocation. The approach suggested here is one of cooperation, rather than confrontation, between treatment centers and external regulatory agencies. Chapter references
