A curriculum and instructional methodology are described to train adults who are mentally retarded to avoid sexual victimization by others.
Abstract
The curriculum aims to teach three concepts: (1) the right to say no; (2) the possibility of running away or using other avoidance maneuvers if looked at or touched in an unwanted fashion; and (3) the possibility of telling someone to obtain help. Guidelines are given to trainers regarding participant selection, the training site, incentives for participation, rules for participation, the observation of participant reaction, followup, and evaluation. Instructions are also given regarding teaching aids, meeting the needs of participants with different levels of functioning, teacher preparation, and adaptations for particular participant groups. 5 references
