This paper identifies key themes from research into program fidelity of sexual abuse prevention programs. It presents a detailed analysis of program fidelity within a study of the Tweenees school-based abuse prevention program (Barron and Topping, 2010).
Abstract
The paper reports how program fidelity was addressed in a program delivered to survivors of child sexual abuse by experienced survivor organization workers. There was also study of program fidelity in the delivery of the program to grade-seven pupils through co-working between survivor organization workers and teachers. Video was taken of all four sessions delivered to the survivors' group. To begin to explore program fidelity when lessons were co-delivered by survivor organization workers and a teacher, the first session of a grade-seven class was videoed. Survivor organization workers achieved high levels of program fidelity characterized by facilitative communicative behaviors (e.g. affirming responses, seeking clarification, checking understanding and summarizing). The grade-seven teacher's communication was characterized by a behavior management focus. Video analysis of interactions was a useful measure for program fidelity and analyzing appropriate communication underpinning delivery of the program. Recommendations for future program fidelity measures are provided for researchers and practitioners in the field. (Published Abstract)
