This project to prevent child sexual abuse in rural South Dakota communities involved community acceptance, a training session for school teachers, presentation of the play, 'The Bubbylonian Encounter,' and classroom followup.
Abstract
Community acceptance focused on the selection of community opinion leaders to preview and comment on the project. This included viewing a videotape of the drama, 'The Bubbylonian Encounter,' which teaches children about 'good' touch, 'bad' touch, and forced sexual touch. The community leaders were asked to comment on the project and complete an anonymous questionnaire addressing the suitability of the program for community children. Given community acceptance, teachers were trained to answer parents' and students' questions about the program, respond to and guide children in dealing with issues in sexual abuse prevention and reporting, and to report suspected abuse of a student. The play was presented live to the children, followed by classroom discussions. Designs for evaluating the prevention program are outlined. 11 references.
