This text presents six sequential activities designed to help second qrade students recognize and understand sexual abuse, develop skills to counter sexual exploitation, and learn to talk to their parents or other trusted adults if they have experienced any form of sexual abuse.
Abstract
The development of the sexual abuse prevention unit is described, including criteria that guided the unit's development. Unit objectives are enumerated. These include developing students' awareness that their bodies are not to be abused by others, recognizing sexual abuse, and developing the perception that any abuse that does occur is not their fault. The unit emphasizes the importance of paying attention to detail in order to provide information if necessary. Teacher guidelines for the unit are listed and include the following: teachers should be familiar with Washington State laws and reporting procedures, and all teachers shall receive inservice training provided by the school district. Suggestions for teachers' responses if students confide that they have been abused are provided.
