Abstract
Those who provide services to victims of rape must avoid any pressure to make the victim feel a particular course of action is required for all victims of rape. The best support that they can give is assurance that the victim is once again in control of self. The protocol for handling rape and sex offenses stresses cooperation among police, medical personnel, prosecuting agencies and social services personnel. It is important for all these personnel to have specific instructions on how to handle rape situations. In rape cases, law enforcement personnel should obtain facts, secure scene and medical help, give victim counseling referrals, obtain and deliver rape kit, and actual crime investigation. Medical personnel procedure includes giving victim referral sheets and keeping statistics. Appendix includes classroom materials.
