This Fact Sheet of the U.S Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) reports the objectives, funding, awards, and accomplishments of BJA’s Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence – Inventory, Tracking, and Reporting (SAFE-ITR) Program, which provides resources that assist agencies in addressing the inventory, tracking, and reporting of sexual assault kits (SAKs).
SAFE-ITR Program goals are 1) to increase knowledge of the number of SAKs in the possession of law enforcement agencies and 2) to determine the movement of SAKs through the criminal justice system. A graph shows the number and amount of SAFE-ITR awards for each fiscal year (FY) from FY 2016 -2020. A review of program accomplishments reports that six or more electronic SAK tracking systems are in place, with more in the installation process. Multiple agency websites have been established to provide public access to data on the tracking of SAKs. Also, multiple agency partnerships have been established to address SAK tracking and reporting. 1 table, a list of resources, and a BJA profile
