A CURRICULUM FOR A 20-HOUR TRAINING PROGRAM IN POLICE RESPONSE TO RAPE IS PRESENTED IN A MANUAL FOR INSTRUCTORS.
Abstract
THE CURRICULUM, BASED ON A STUDY OF RAPE IN PALO ALTO AND SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF., IS PRESENTED IN FOUR UNITS: THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND LEGAL SYSTEM (ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE AS IT RELATES TO RAPE, RESEARCH FINDINGS ON RAPE, RELATED STATUTORY PROVISIONS AND TRIAL STRATEGIES); RAPE INVESTIGATION (RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES FOR POLICE, INITIAL INTERVIEW STRATEGIES, PHYSICAL EVIDENCE); RAPE VICTIMS (THE EMOTIONAL IMPACT OF RAPE ON THE VICTIM); AND ROLE PLAYING (PRACTICE INTERVIEWS TO REINFORCE PROCEDURES FOR THE INITIAL INTERVIEW). EACH UNIT IS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS NAMED WHY, WHAT, AND HOW. THE WHY SECTION EXPLAINS WHY THE UNIT IS RELEVANT TO THE OFFICER. THE WHAT SECTION INCLUDES AN OUTLINE OF THE CONTENT OF THE UNIT AND A SAMPLE LECTURE. THE HOW SECTION SUGGESTS TEACHING APPROACHES (ADVANCE PREPARATION, HANDOUTS, AUDIOVISUAL AIDS, LECTURE AND DISCUSSION TECHNIQUES, ROLE-PLAY EXERCISES). SOME OF THE CURRICULUM MATERIALS ARE SUITED TO PRESERVICE TRAINING; OTHERS ARE APPLICABLE TO MORE ADVANCED TRAINING. TRAINERS ARE URGED TO ADAPT AND BUILD FROM THE MANUAL ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS, CONSTRAINTS, AND RESOURCES. THE CURRICULUM CAN BE ADAPTED TO SUIT THE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES OF ANY AGENCY. CONSIDERATIONS IN ADMINISTERING THE TRAINING PROGRAM--ORGANIZATION AND MATERIALS, RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK--ARE NOTED. A FORM FOR PARTICIPANT EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM IS PROVIDED. (LKM)
