California's Penal Code requires the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to establish complaint guidelines and training for sexual harassment in the workplace.
Abstract
The law requires that complaint guidelines be followed by city police departments, county sheriff departments, district police agencies, and university police departments. The guidelines and training were developed because sexual harassment in the workplace is of increasing concern in California. As a source of personal and organizational distress, sexual harassment is defined to include unwelcomed or offensive behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Guidelines are presented for establishing sexual harassment policies and complaint procedures. Learning goals of a sexual harassment curriculum are identified that focus on Federal laws concerned with sexual harassment, behavior that constitutes sexual harassment, appropriate responses to sexually offensive or unwanted sexual behavior in the workplace, and the sexual harassment complaint process and associated legal remedies in California. An overview of sexual harassment is provided, along with information on police roles and responsibilities in preventing sexual harassment. Summaries of sexual harassment cases and a sample sexual harassment policy are included. Supplemental information on sexual harassment and related legislation is appended. References
