A U.S. Senate committee hearing in November 1985 received oral and written testimony in support of S.1818, a bill that would add the offense of 'felonious sexual molestation of a minor' to the list of offenses in the Indian Major Crimes Act.
Abstract
The current law does not cover serious acts of child sexual abuse that do not involve carnal knowledge. The law also lacks adequate coverage of nonforcible sexual conduct involving children, speakers noted. Speaking in support of the law were a U.S. Assistant Attorney General and the executive director of the National Congress of American Indians. Prepared statements came from individual Indians, government officials, and a representative of an advocacy organization. The constitution and bylaws of Voices for Children, an organization formed to disseminate information on child abuse and neglect to people on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana are also included.
