Twelve papers provide instruction in how to identify and treat male sexual abuse victims of all ages.
Abstract
The first three chapters provide a framework for understanding the mind-set of the sexually abused male client and the recovery process he faces. One chapter describes abreactive therapy techniques for addressing dissociation, a common symptom in sexual abuse victims. Post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis and the experience of combat veterans as a model for understanding men who have been sexually assaulted is considered in another chapter. In the third chapter, an overview of the recovery from sexual abuse uses a grief model. The three overview chapters are followed by five broader chapters on treatment. They discuss creativity in treatment planning and delivery, treatment of the bond and cycle of shame and sexuality, the use of body massage in the recovery process, coed short-term group therapy, and the role of the nonoffending parent in incest dynamics and treatment. The remainder of the book focuses on treatment strategies with various populations of male victims of sexual abuse including homosexual men, child and adolescent boys, preschool boys, and sex offenders who were sexually victimized as children.
